New Readers Press
This series is a favorite of mine because it teaches
math in a way that is built around reading, writing,
talking and understanding math concepts rather than
just “getting the answer.” The series
has four separate subject books: Whole Numbers and
Money; Decimals, Fractions, Ratios and Percents;
Measurement and Data Analysis; Algebra and Geometry;
and a Comprehensive Review Text. It was designed
to help students overcome math anxiety and to discover
that math is interesting and purposeful, and of
course, to develop math sense.

This
is part of the National Council of Teachers of
Mathematics web site that provides lesson plans,
web-based resources, on-line interactive activities,
and more. The section call “I-maths”
has some really great games and interactive activities.
There are lessons that link, for example, math
and social studies, by having students plan a
trip to the state capital.
Another
example is the Factor Game. Go to http://illuminations.nctm.org/.
Click on “Tools” and scroll down to
the Factor Game. Students can play this great
on-line game with each other or against the computer
while they build number sense. Adjustable difficulty
level.

is a GREAT site that allows the users to manipulate
pattern blocks, base ten blocks (whole number
and decimal), fraction circles and squares, several
types of number lines, as well as puzzles, mastermind

algebra tiles, algebra balance scales, geoboards,
and much more.
