Title: ESOL Instructor

Overview
The ESOL Instructor provides English as a second language and computer instruction to adult learners in the ESOL Program three evenings days per week This position is responsible for creating lesson plans, providing quality instruction, and inputting student attendance data onto Apricot and LACES. The ESOL Instructor receives 1.5 hours of prep time for each 3-hour class, 5.5 hours of data entry, assessment, and attendance monitoring, and one hour for a mandatory meeting each week. Instructional methods reflect a student-centered teaching philosophy. Classes are held remotely or in-person depending on the student needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality classroom instruction that meets CLAS standards
  • Prepare lesson plans and classroom materials according to curriculum, utilizing program contextualized textbooks and supportive resources.
  • Plan a syllabus appropriate to assigned class level according to ESOL curricula guidelines and student needs.
  • Contribute to the on-going curriculum development process. Review and adopt new materials as needed.
  • Administer and score TABE Clas-E Writing Test for programs as needed. Administer BEST Plus Test for programs as needed.
  • Assess and place students in appropriate levels. Evaluate and document student progress, make placement recommendations and changes in accordance with the National Reporting Services (NRS) descriptors for Student Performance Levels and program class levels/focus.
  • Maintain attendance and assessment records and reports for students on Apricot and in LACES. Contribute to the overall retention of students in assigned class.
  • Coordinate instruction with other programs withing workforce development to ensure that clients have maximum opportunities to improve their communication and job readiness skills, gain employment, and advance towards career goals.
  • Participate in the goal setting and meeting process with the students assigned in class.
  • Attend regularly scheduled program meetings and periodic professional training sessions. The Institute requires 20 hours of professional development per year.
  • Coordinate activities for interns/volunteers, including creating materials for small group sessions and field trips.
  • Attend regular calibration sessions for BEST Plus and TABE Clas-E Writing.
  • Perform other related duties as needed, including assisting with administering and scoring student evaluations, maintaining the wait list, and providing weekly attendance updates.
  • Ensure compliance with funding guidelines.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • At least one year of adult ESOL teaching experience; experience with immigrant populations and non-literate adult learners preferred.
  • Highly-focused individual capable of managing multiple assignments, including leading quality assurance while routinely producing accurate program analysis and reports
  • Prior experience administering standardized tests such as Best, Best Plus, and TABE
  • Knowledgeable of emerging best practices in ESOL education, as well as local education opportunities to foreign-born populations.
  • Compassionate and patient personality who is committed to ensuring the highest quality programming and student satisfaction.
  • Excel at client documentation and capable of modeling similar performances with staff and interns
  • Ability to successfully prioritize and execute work responsibilities. Ability to work independently as well as with the colleagues.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and data management software platforms.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information about client or staff.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field required; related MA preferred
  • Minimum of one years of adult ESOL teaching experience required; experience teaching adult immigrant population preferred.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office required
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritize duties in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in additional languages a plus
